Varney-Porter family papers, 1756-1939 (bulk 1808-1922).

The collection contains papers related to the Randolph, Porter, and Varney families, and includes correspondence, legal and legislative documents, and historical and genealogical research. The papers of Thomas Randolph include correspondence while he served as attorney general for the Indiana Territory, and contain letters of William Henry Harrison and James Dill. Topics include territorial government and a court martial at Fort Knox II. Porter family papers include letters to Albert Gallatin Porter from family and noted individuals such as Newton Booth and Henry Ward Beecher. Also included are correspondence and legal and military documents of Thomas Porter, genealogical information, and Columbus, Ind. land and election records. Varney family papers include personal and military correspondence of A.L. Varney, and letters of Gordon E. and Katharine Porter Varney. Topics include Katharine Varney's participation in the Indianapolis Woman's Club, family histories, and A.L. Varney's travel abroad. There are also photos, 1850s-1940s, of the Porter and Varney families. Lastly, there is historical research collected by W.H.H. Terrell for a proposed history of Indiana covering important individuals, places, and events.
